MyPlant
Privacy Policy
MyPlant works without an account, and then your plants, care history, journal and photos stay on your device. This policy explains what leaves your device, and when.
Without an account
- Everything stays on your device. Plants, care history, journal entries, photos and settings are stored only on your iPhone.
- Weather (optional). If you allow location or pick a city, the app rounds the position to about 1 km and sends only that to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway) to get a forecast, and to Apple to look up the city name. The position is kept on your device and never sent to us.
- Reminders are scheduled on your device. We don't use push servers.
With an account
An account backs up and syncs your plants, and is needed for the AI features unless you use your own API key. We keep:
- your email address and a hashed password, to sign you in;
- your plants, care history, journal entries, AI check-ups and follow-up chats, and photos, to sync them across your devices;
- a record of each AI use (when, which feature, which model), to apply daily limits.
Before photos are stored or sent anywhere, the app resizes them and re-encodes them, which removes metadata such as where they were taken.
AI features
When you identify a plant, ask the AI doctor (including follow-up questions) or get care suggestions, the app sends the photo(s), your questions and the plant details you've entered (such as its name, placement, notes and recent care) through our server to one of these AI providers:
- Alibaba Cloud Model Studio (Qwen models), servers in mainland China. Used for identification and care suggestions, and for the AI doctor unless you pick Claude. In mainland China it is the only provider.
- Anthropic (Claude models), servers in the United States. Used for the AI doctor when you pick Claude.
They process the request to return an answer. Under their terms for API customers they don't use it to train their models, and they may keep it for a limited time (for example, to monitor abuse). Our server doesn't keep the photos or answers. Only what you save, such as a diagnosis in a plant's history, is stored with your plants.
With your own API key
If you add your own key from Anthropic, OpenAI or Alibaba Cloud (Settings → Your Own AI Keys), the key is stored only in your iPhone's Keychain and is never sent to us. Remove it there at any time; if you delete the app, the key is cleared the next time MyPlant is installed and opened. AI requests then go straight from your iPhone to that provider, not through our server, under your own agreement with them. We don't see these requests or their answers, except what you save to your plants.
Who handles your data
- Supabase hosts our database, file storage and sign-in, on servers in Seoul, South Korea. It also sends account emails.
- Alibaba Cloud and Anthropic (and OpenAI, only with your own key), as described above.
- MET Norway and Apple, for weather and city names.
We don't sell your data, share it for advertising, track you across apps or websites, or use analytics SDKs.
How long we keep it
We keep your account data until you delete your account. Short-lived server logs, which contain no photos, are deleted automatically after a few days.
Deleting your data
In the app, go to Settings → Account → Delete Account. This deletes your account, your synced data and your photos from our server right away. The plants on your iPhone stay until you delete them or the app. You can also email us to ask for a copy, a correction or deletion of your data.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or export your data, or to object to how we use it. We use your data to provide the features you ask for, and to prevent abuse (such as through usage limits). To exercise these rights, contact us. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
MyPlant isn't directed at children under 13 (under 14 in mainland China), and we don't knowingly collect their data.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS). Each account can reach only its own data on our server.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date above. We'll tell you in the app before any change to how your data is shared.
